Public Exhibition CANCELLED

11th March 2020
Late on Wednesday afternoon, the Victoria Quarter Project Team emailed out the following information:
"As you will be aware, Fairview New Homes and One Housing are currently holding another round of public consultation on our updated proposals for the redevelopment of Victoria Quarter, New Barnet. However, we regret to inform you that we have had to cancel our planned public exhibitions at St Margaret’s Nursery School as part of this consultation.
This was a difficult decision for us to make. However, the health, safety and wellbeing of our event attendees and staff is always our first priority. Due to ongoing concerns about the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) through public gatherings, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel our exhibitions on this occasion.
All of the information which we had planned to present at the exhibitions will still be made available via our project website www.victoriaquarter.consultationonline.co.uk shortly, where an electronic version of the feedback form will also be available. If you have any further questions you can still contact the project team via feedback@consultation-online.co.uk or 0800 298 7040.
Consultation packs including hard copies of the exhibition boards, feedback form and freepost envelopes will still be made available to collect from St Margaret’s Nursery School on Thursday 12th March from 5pm-8:30pm and Saturday 14th March from 11am-2pm.
We would encourage you to still take the opportunity to review the information available as part of this public consultation, and provide comments and feedback before we submit a planning application to Barnet Council."

Speech by CABE Chair

17th November 2009

In a major speech at Tate Modern, the outgoing chair of the Commission for Architecture and the Build Environment (CABE) spoke about the problems of retail led redevelopment of town centres. Sir John Sorrell said "Our concern is not only the quality of this kind of development – which is generally very poor – but the way in which architecture and places are created in the image of the retailer". He specifically mentioned New Barnet, stating "both Asda and Tesco are pushing weak schemes here against strong local opposition", and that "the Asda scheme fails on every level: it's car focussed and architecturally confused with poor housing tacked on".

ASDA Advert judged 'misleading'

4th November 2009

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) have published a judgement on an ASDA advert promoting their New Barnet planning application.

In late May, ASDA published a four page advert as a 'wraparound' on the Barnet Times. (It appeared a few days before ASDA carried out an extensive local phone survey, but interestingly the results of that poll have never been published.) A local resident made a complaint to the ASA about the claims made in the newspaper advert.
In a recently published judgement, ASDA was found to have breached the 'truthfulness' and 'substantiation' clauses of the advertising code. The ASA have ruled that ASDA's misleading map of supermarket sites in New Barnet must not be used in advertising material again.
