Action - Residents Forum

Chipping Barnet Residents Forum

The London Borough of Barnet hold a "Residents Forum" in each of the 3 parliamentary constituencies every couple of months.

The Chipping Barnet Residents Forum covers East Barnet, High Barnet & Oakleigh Wards (plus Brunswick Park, Coppetts, Totteridge, and Underhill wards). It is held in various venues around the area. A panel of council officers is chaired by a local councillor. Other local ward councillors are often in attendance.

According to the council's publicity:

"Have your say on council plans and local proposals. It's your meeting. You can put questions, debate issues and set the agenda."

In practice, the council prefer questions to be submitted in advance so that written answers can be prepared. A small amount of debate is tolerated, depending on the whims of the Chairman. Questions and answers are not read out, the person putting the question is simply asked if they are satisfied with the written answer on the agenda paper. Unless they are prepared to immediately query the answer or ask a supplementary question, the meeting quickly moves on to the next item. If the questioner is not present, the question is passed over and nobody else is permitted to discuss it.
