Local Attitudes To Proposed Superstore Developments - September 2008

As part of Save New Barnet Campaign's aim of informing and consulting with the local community, we have been busy exploring what the local community think about the proposed ASDA and Tesco developments, and how they would like New Barnet to evolve. Alarmingly many people still underestimate the size of the proposed ASDA and Tesco developments, and hence the impact on the local area.

We commissioned a professional research organisation to explore local opinion. This research has revealed overwhelming opposition to the Tesco and ASDA schemes amongst a sample of over 500 local people who are aware of the scale of the proposed developments.

Opposition to the proposed ASDA and Tesco developments reflects widespread concern about:

  • additional traffic and impact on the environment (congestion, noise, pollution, etc).
  • destruction of the essentially residential character of the area.
  • de-personalisation of the area, leading to alienation, anti-social behaviour and crime.
  • closure of existing small businesses.

It appears that most residents don't want to see the residential character of the area and its quality of life destroyed. It also seems that you do not want a shopping centre that will attract a lot more traffic from other areas because you feel it will make New Barnet a less pleasant place in which to live. Hence 90% do not want another supermarket larger than the existing local Sainsbury's, nearly 90% firmly oppose the Tesco scheme, and about three-quarters of local people oppose the ASDA scheme.

A report of the detailed findings can be downloaded below. The report provides a wealth of information on all shades of local attitudes, including those who favour the proposed ASDA or Tesco schemes.

Save New Barnet Campaign will continue to explore local opinion on these and other issues. We want to hear from as many local people as possible, including all shades of opinion, so that we can help give a voice to the local community.
